There are those who are understandably dismissive of the idea of so-called “hashtag” activism — the sort of activism that doesn’t require any substantive personal involvement beyond tapping out 140 characters or less and signing off with the current hashtag du jour. In this context it’s easy to become cynical about modern activism, but rest assured there are real people out there backing the causes that others only read about or hear about on the news. Real people who have attached their names, shared their ideas, donated their time and money to causes they care about. In the end it really doesn’t matter how they came to an awareness of a particular movement; what matters is that when the call was put forth, they showed up. People drive activism and activism drives change. These are just some of the faces of change.
